King Von - Took Her To The O (Vevo Ctrl)

Characterized by themes of violence and struggle, the experimental subgenre drill has chopped its place into the Chicago rap scene during the last decade, and one of it’s rising stars, King Von, has become a force to deal with. Born Dayvon Bennett, Von hails from the O Block neighborhood; at 25, he’s been in and out of jail three times. “The third time I was with Lil Durk,” he told Lip Service. “I got bonded out, we got money now.” A lot of that success has to do with Durk, a godfather of the drill game who brought in Von as a protege a few years ago. But it also has to do with Von’s own charisma - a balance between self-assured G swag and a natural charm that starts with his smile and ends with his humor. Take the name of his new project: the cover of ‘Levon James,’ depicts the MC in a Lakers jersey doing Bron’s signature chalk throw. A symbol of aspirational greatness, but a bit on the cheeky side. Von came in the Crtl box and rocked “Took Her to the O,” and another track from the album. Stay tuned. There’s more coming from the session.

At the end of last year, our DSCVR Artist To Watch 2021 series touted 24kGoldn as a dude about to make a dent. The funny thing was, by the time his DSCVR performances of “Mood” and “Coco Chanel” went live, seemingly everyone was already watching him. A catchy collab with his pal Iann Dior, “Mood” was stapled to the top of every chart from Pop to Alt. As the New York Times noted, the joyful Cali kid was the "pandemic pop star." Longtime fans know he ain’t no flash in the pan -- they’ve been boppin’ to Goldn since “Valentino” and “City of Angels.” His 'El Dorado' debut album is now here, and just like its name suggests, it’s full of treasures. He hit our Ctrl studio to perform “Love or Lust,” an appealing gem driven by a thumpin’ bassline. Could see him doing these with a full band, but he’s totally cool vibin' alone, a sure sign of a real star in the making.

We’ve been Jessie Reyez fans for a while now. The R&B singer with the fierce attitude and addictive confidence has risen through Vevo’s ranks during the past few years. Her DSCVR and LIFT work was riveting, and it’s been a thrill to see her artistic vision - in place since we first connected with her - continuously blossom. Life goes by slowly in the Texas suburbs, and Conan Gray captured the doldrums of his high school senior year in his first Indie song, "Idle Town." When the video hit his YouTube channel, it resonated deeply; after two and a half years, it's closing in on 15M views. The craft and catchiness of Gray’s music is central to his broad skill set. Gray said that once he began writing songs and sharing them with the world, he just wanted to do it more and more. After connecting with an LA producer and refining that craft, "Generation Why" and "Crush Culture" solidified a sturdy career path. Long story short? Conan Gray is going places. While enjoying a parade of positive press, he's opened for Panic! At the Disco and made a splash at the UK’s The Great Escape festival. Powell Aguirre has a great imagination - you can hear it in his music. So the up ‘n’ coming producer, reppin’ Seattle via LA, presents himself as Surf Mesa. Relatively unknown until last year, the 20-year-old caught a monster wave with a sample of singer Emilee Flood’s cover of Franki Valli's’ “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” This July, “ily (i love you baby)” became RIAA-certified gold behind the song's breezy familiarity; it quickly became ubiquitous on TikTok. Surf has used this popularity to become even more inventive. Recent highlights include remixes for both Halsey and Marshmello. The college dropout recently delivered his first post-“ily” track. Featuring Gus Dapperton on vocals, “Somewhere” glides along on ethereal synths and drum-machine fills - it’s rich and full of feeling. The young producer has quickly leapt from what he calls the “budget EDM” of his Soundcloud days. Because he doesn’t sing, his Artists To Watch performances required some special guests. Gus kindly joined for “Somewhere” and a pair of violinists and vocalists (singers Melissa McMillan and Miranda Joan, and instrumentalists Francesca Dardani and Tia Allen) surrounded him for “ily.” Be sure to watch ‘em both. Each has plenty of liftoff.

Zoe Wees has only released a handful of songs, but she already feels like a force to be reckoned with. Acting isn’t the only thing that Olivia Rodrigo is great at. When the ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ star dropped her “drivers license” video back at the start of the year, the overwhelming response made it clear that she had a way of deeply communicating with listeners not only as an actor, but as an artist. Views-wise, it crossed the 200-million mark in just four months. Pretty impressive for someone who had never put out an album on her own. Rodrigo, who proved “drivers license” was no fluke when “deja vu” also hit a home run upon release last month, is fixing that. Her ‘Sour’ debut arrives on May 21, and by the time it gets here, she will have performed at both the BRIT Awards and Saturday Night Live. Billboard reports that the 18-year-old pop phenom is the “first artist to send her first two proper singles straight into the Hot 100’s top 10.” The SoCal native, who wrote “driver’s license” with her pal Dan Nigro, recently told the press that she was obsessed with emotions, and loved her jobs as both actor and musician because they allow her to be so expressive. Zoe Wees - Girls Like Us. An exclusive performance for Vevo DSCVR, the channel for the best in new music.

Zoe Wees has only released a handful of songs, but she already feels like a force to be reckoned with. The German powerhouse grew up in Hamburg, where she spent time crafting songs in English and honing her guitar and piano skills. Covers of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” are some of the earliest posts on her YouTube channel. But Wees always had her own story to tell. “Control” is a power ballad inspired by her battles with benign rolandic epilepsy and the mental anguish it caused. Her breakout debut, it struck a chord; “Control” has been watched more than 40 million times. Next on Zoe’s to-do list was tackling the unfair beauty standards perpetuated by social media. So the Jessie J acolyte dropped “Girls Like Us,” a marching song for those battling the myths of physical perfection. Again, Wees’ effort was met with applause from both fans and critics. “I love dark songs, I love deep songs. Music was my diary. It still is,” she’s said. In a way, both her debut EP ‘Golden Wings’ and our DSCVR performances of “Girls Like Us” and “Hold Me Like You Used To” feel like she’s giving us a glimpse into personal journal entries. We’re lucky she’s so candid.
