There’s no faking going on.” For last year’s ‘Proud of Me Now,’ Sheff and Brooklyn rapper and frequent collaborator Sleepy Hollow decided to push the envelope; on “Tip Toe,” Sheff growls over a sample of quirky '60s artist Tiny Tim’s “Tip Toe Through the Tulips.” “Lights On” and “Eeny Meany Miny Moe” are also highlights, and our Ctrl team invited him from Flatbush to our DUMBO studio for some live takes of each. Welcome to the world of Doja Cat. Born and raised in L.A., the 24-year-old self-taught singer-rapper is a vet of sorts. The arts were central to her upbringing, and she started sharing her music on Soundcloud back in 2013. A year later she dropped her much-buzzed-about ‘Purrr!’ EP. Ever since, she’s nurtured an ever-growing array of feverish fans who revere her for combining a radiant charisma with unique flow and tongue-in-cheek lyrics (see: the irresistible“MOOO!”). Seems like Doja has designed her version of alt-R&B to take off in any direction she chooses. Tours with Lizzo and Theophilius London led right into 2018’s impressive ‘Amala,’ her debut proper, followed by last year’s ‘Hot Pink.’ That album’s “Say So” is currently clocking big numbers. Arresting visuals help. Her videos for both her radio juggernaut and "Rules" are wildly fun. When the Vevo production team united with the feline phenom to figure out performance ideas, the creative juices were flowing. The goal? Put the “cat” in Doja Cat - a decision that resulted in what’s probably our most ambitious studio build to date for a LIFT performance. Who’s gonna be the next new face of NYC drill? CJ is throwing his hat in the ring. The Staten Island hero's booming anthem “Whoopty” recently hit #19 on the Billboard Hot 100, and as far New York's scene goes, only the late Pop Smoke can claim better. The success of CJ’s hit has a lot do with its familiar feel. The “whoopty” phrase is popular slang. And similar Bollywood samples can be heard in Memo600 and King Von’s “Exposing Me,” and Pop’s “Shake The Room.” CJ's got some names in his corner, too. The music on Lorde's 'Melodrama' reflects the wealth of emotions the New Zealand native has experienced of late, and they’re rendered with the kind of poise we’ve come to expect from the pop superstar. Watch out, Ashnikko is here. The trash-talking pixie known for her eff-off attitude has been killin’ it lately. Makes sense, too: Killing things is part of her persona. “Deal With It,” her anti-boy anthem with Kelis, racked up millions of views in just a few days. Pop Smoke - Dior - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2020, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.

Pop Smoke chose to go it alone on his debut mixtape, 'Meet The Woo,' and with zero features, fans got a deep dose of the buzzed-about rapper. "[I'm] the hardest in New York," he once told an interviewer while explaining the choice to eschew features, "you want other people in my shit?" The Brooklyn MC has one of the most ominous rasps around, and when he rhymes - often about street action that includes lots of vivid violence and milks the darker tones of drill - there's usually some kind of threat in the air. From "Welcome To the Party" to "Better Have Your Gun," this fan of 50 Cent, JAY-Z and Meek Mill, a Canarsie dude with Panamanian family roots, is reviving the kind of NYC rap that flaunts its dangerous side. It’s a mix of "aggression and fashion" he has said, the second qualifier perhaps a reference to his other hit, "Dior." When the New York Times wrote about him in early September, the opening scene took place in a high-end clothing store. It's an enticing mix for sure, and the two performances he delivered for our Artists To Watch series, illustrate Pop Smoke's moody charisma. Put on the headphones and crank it up.
