Each Audrey Nuna song feels like a surprise. The "damn right" singer's production choices often match her vocal approaches that span a variety of styles - from stilted “yas” over trap hats on “Comic Sans” (her collab with rapper Jack Harlow) to the gorgeous singing on “Space." There's a general consensus that the New Jersey native works the R&B realm, but she’s clearly operating way outside the genre's norms. She calls her approach “a weird omelette of random ingredients that for some reason is tasty.” As a Korean-American operating in a space where such representation is in the minority, Nuna’s boundary-breaking ethos goes outside genres. This massive George Condo fan simply relishes challenging expectations by questioning traditional comfort zones. When it comes to her music, however, you can always expect auteur-level thoughtfulness. “I don’t like the feeling of half-assing anything,” she’s said. Nuna has a debut project in the works for her quickly growing fanbase. Nuna's DSCVR performances of "Space" and "Blossom" are amazing; she's almost breathless in the latter song. Giveon - Stuck On You. An exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2021, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.

You’ll never mistake the voice. When Giveon puts that emotional oomph behind one of his self-penned lyrics, his tone is utterly distinct. and it gives him a leg up on the competition. These days, getting noticed is becoming a lot easier for the SoCal native who tells interviewers that, yes, he wouldn’t mind being a global star someday. The wave of support the 25-year-old has received this year suggests his skills are plenty deep. R&B nuggets “Like I Want You” and “Heartbreak Anniversary” have created a groundswell around him, and that feature on Drake’s “Chicago Freestyle” didn’t hurt much, either. His storyline is cool. Mom encouraged his singing as he grew up in Long Beach, filling his head with Mary J Blige and Anita Baker. As a high-schooler he sang Miguel tunes because he had a high voice. In 2013, after that voice changed, a Grammy Museum program nudged him into performing Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To the Moon.” It was just right for his uniquely textured baritone, and Giveon found his pathway; the kid who had always loved writing stories learned he had a knack for crafting narrative songs. Work with Toronto producer Sevn Thomas bolstered his confidence and turned that craft into art. Touring with Snoh Aalegra honed his stage skills. Jumping on the Drake track earned him global notice. Earlier this year, he dropped the ‘Take Time’ and ‘When It’s All Said and Done’ EPs, and clocked a 100 million streams - nice milestone. Giveon knows his bari is an “acquired taste” that some people don’t instantly warm up to. We know he put it to great use in our Artists To Watch studio. Wanna know where the hotness is? Go to the fans. The hip-hop outlet Ambrosia For Heads did just that when they asked people to assess last year's best hip-hop discs. The results rang out: Freddie Gibbs’ album with Madlib, ‘Bandana,’ ruled. The Midwest rapper’s collab with the SoCal producer is a great mix of perspectives. Gibbs' street attitude and natural grit meshes well with Mad’s cinematic sounds (check “Massage Seats”) and deep beats. A followup to 2014’s acclaimed ‘Piñata’ disc, ‘Bandana’ is a powerhouse that swerves from lane to lane without fretting about its exact location at any given moment. “I'm not no boom-bap rapper or whatever the fuck that shit is,” Freddie recently told GQ. “I'm not a trap rapper. You can't really put me in a box, man.” 'Cept for that one in our Brooklyn studio. Gibbs said yes to Vevo's Ctrl invite, and came to crush “Cataracts” and “Soul Right,” two of ‘Bandana’’s hottest tracks. Feel free to share 'em.

Just close your eyes and listen. H.E.R.’s voice is so beautiful, it almost makes trying to describe it seem trivial. The Grammy-winning singer broke onto the scene in 2016 with an elegant approach to classic R&B. Her skills were right up front, but her career also enjoyed some initial thrust by her RCA labelmates Alicia Keys and Bryson Tiller, who publicly championed her debut EP, ‘H.E.R., Vol. 1.’ Eventually, her first two discs were combined and released as a full-length debut: ‘H.E.R,’ which gave us “Focus” and delivered the Daniel Caesar collab “Best Part” to the top of the Adult R&B charts. And how’s this for full circle: This year, Tiller was featured on “Could’ve Been,” from the Grammy-nominated ‘I Used To Know Her,’ and H.E.R.’s dedicated audience has grown big-time. After lots of touring and fest gigs, it seems like she’s on everyone’s radar these days. Strapped with a guitar and backed by some killer players, H.E.R. brought a vibey rendition of new single “Slide” to our NYC studio.

When Leicester’s easy life took second place in BBC’s Sound of 2020 poll, fans were ecstatic...but not surprised. The alt-R&B collective's trajectory has been on the rise for years. Tracks like “sunday” certainly captured a low-gravity vibe, foreshadowing a turn to jazz and sampling that would become more prevalent on 2020’s “junk food.” Singer Murray Matravers and his crew have always had a strong grip on their sound and aesthetics, both of which fit in nicely in our London studio. “skeletons” channels a light house music bounce (can’t wait to bop to it in a pub) and “daydreams” feels exactly like its title. The bands are back, baby!

If you’re not familiar with UK rap, much of the genre's last decade, especially in the fierce world of drill, has been influenced by Nathan Peckham, aka Giggs. The South Londoner has had plenty of influence on the style. 2008's ‘Walk In Da Park" set a standard for rawness and honesty that would be a requisite for all those following in his footsteps. In 2017 he began earning an international rep by bringing his flow to two tracks on Drake’s ‘More Life.’ Giggs popped over to Brooklyn to perform a couple tracks from last year’s ‘Now Or Never’ album. Both the title track and "Buff Baddies" have plenty of punch.
